Chapter 12

Hannah

Pitta-tta-tah-tuh.

No! No! Please no! I head-butt my steering wheel. “Not now,” I groan. Why does my car have to fail at the worst of times... or all the time? Why can’t I ride a bike to work like Steve? With no other option and trapped in a time crunch, I return to the Gakhar’s porch passing by the blooming roses.

“Stay there, Pops. I got it.” Benji yells from the other side. I hate how my heart flutters at the baritone of his voice, recognizing it immediately. You’re Aaron’s girl. I exhale staring at my toes. “Hannah?”

“My car...”

“Let me fetch the jumper cables and—”

“I don’t have time. I’m already running late.” I mumble avoiding his dark eyes with uneven flecks. “Could you, err... I’d like to ride you—with you!”

I slap my hands over my mouth, mortified. Both our eyes widen, our cheeks burning with heat. He’s right, being around him is a terrible idea. The dust hasn’t settled.

Aarsi joins his side, a paw hooking between the buttons in his dress shirt. One of her fingers slides between the fabrics. “Hi Hannah.”

Benji gulps, breaking his blush. “It will be a minute. I’ll be right back.” His smirk creeps up the corner of his cheek. “I’m just helping a friend.” He winks back to his mom, who clamps her hands and sighs with admiration.

Juan groans.

Their dad elbows him, “Why don’t you drive Hannah, so Benjamin and Aarsi will have more time together. When you get back, the two of you can bring me outside and we can have a better look at her car.”

Juan rolls his eyes. “Sure. Whatever.” Benji punches Juan’s shoulder on his way out the door muttering something about trucks.

I hop into Juan’s vehicle.

“Where to Ice Queen?” He revs his hemi engine. I envy the power it possesses.

“Just the hospital. Thanks.” I whisper afraid he might hear me. Juan’s one scary dude. The squinty eyes, the height, the cold shoulder. If anyone is the icy one in this vehicle, it’s him. The drive is silent until he backs into an empty parking space.

“He thinks you’re hot.”

“Benji?”

“Yeah.” His intense glare softens. “My brother will never say it, but he’s really jealous that you’re with Aaron. He’s a sappy romantic too. He won’t be happy with Aarsi, but he’s more than capable of having her fall in love with him. I don’t want him too.”

“Is it because you like her?” They are closer in age.

“She’s cute I guess.” He drums his fingers on the steering wheel. “No, he’s my best friend and he won’t listen to me, always the hypocrite giving me dating advice. You like him too.”

“A bit.”

“A lot. You hunted him down. He’s not perfect, but he will do everything in his strength to make your life perfect, even if that means pretending he likes your lame boyfriend.” He glances at the clock on his dash, “We’ll restart your battery and drop off your keys. Actually, I’ll have Benji drop them off.” He winks.

Huh, maybe he’s not so ice cold after all.
